Sommerlystskoven, Rødding

Distance: 19.05 Km

Sommerlystskoven is located on the southern edge of the folk high school town Rødding, approx. 500 m from the city center with hotel, folk high school and sports center.

Sommerlystskoven is the city's recreational heart, and offers a richly varied deciduous forest with trees of different ages and heights. Here and there between the deciduous trees you will find small "islands" of conifers. Along some of the area's sturdy paths you will find information boards about the classic Danish forest trees. In several places, the paths run along the edge of the forest, and from here there are wonderful views of forest-fringed fields and forest edges. The area by Sommerlystskoven is a very humid area, which means that the life of the trees is shorter than usual. As part of an overall development plan for the forest, new ditches have been made to divert water away. In 2018, new forest trees were planted in clearings created by storms and disease. A part of the forest is allowed to stand as untouched forest, i.e. that no trees are felled or removed.

Learn about trees
Around the Sommerlystskoven along the paths you will find a number of signs that tell about the trees in the forest. These are ordinary Danish forest trees, which you get the opportunity to get to know. An ideal place for a walk with children of all ages - for play and learning.

The rattlesnake
At Raslebækken in the western edge of the forest, you can enjoy Brændstrup Bæk's winding course and its persistent rustling sounds when it winds along the forest edge. At Raslebækken, in the spring you can experience the rare flower creeping valerian, which appreciates the swampy soil.

The track line
The route from an old German narrow-gauge railway goes through Sommerlystskoven in a north-south direction. It is the railway from Haderslev-Gram-Rødding, of which an approx. 4 km. long distance between Rødding and Brændstrup. Narrow-gauge railways were built from around 1898 on lines where the need for freight and passenger transport was not so great. The otherwise German thoroughness was relaxed a bit, and for example not stations were built but local boarding places that were looked after by local people. The line here was in operation from 1899 to 1938, when the increased road traffic took the breath away from the old steam locomotives. The narrow-gauge railway is colloquially called Æ Kleinbahn. For many years, Rødding was a tingby and thus the northernmost province with a tingsted in the former Prussia.

Memorial stone
The vicarage is a memorial stone to the area's hardships during the Swedish wars. The Rødding priest Anders Pedersen hid in the woods together with the priest from Skodborg and other good people for the Polish mercenaries, who razed the area thoroughly at the time. The priest and his people died in battle with the Polish soldiers.

Facilities
In Sommerlystskoven there are a number of facilities for free use. There is a packed lunch cabin at Festpladsen in the middle of the forest. Here there is also a barbecue and fireplace. There are overview boards over the area, and the wide paths around make it easy to move around in the area. You can park in a small parking lot at the eastern end with a driveway from the road Sommerlyst. The paths in the forest are good gravel paths, which make it possible to move with prams and wheelchairs.

Sommerlystskoven is owned by Vejen Municipality.
