Black Sun - a natural phenomenon where starlings dance in the evening sky.

Distance: 1.19 Km

The phenomenon Black Sun is a fantastic experience when 100.000, maybe 400.000 starlings dance the ballet in the evening sky over Ribe Marsh. Season March / April and September / October.

The dance of the starlings is determined by the number of birds of prey and the weather. The optimal conditions are a relatively quiet and dry evening, as well as a suitable number of birds of prey, which help to create the beautiful formations in the sky. On a stormy and rainy evening without birds of prey, the starlings dive down quite quickly and go to rest for the night in the reed forest.

In spring and autumn, flocks of starlings of many thousands are seen calming down in the reed forest in the area by Ribe Vesterå and from the bird tower by Ribe Østerå. In Ribe Østerå you can experience a rich bird life throughout the year. 10 min. walk from the train station stands a handicap-friendly bird tower, with a great view of the wetland.
