Sønderho Gamle Fuglekøje on Fanø
Distance: 20.52 Km
Sønderho Gamle Fuglekøje, which was built in 1866, is located on the coast at Albue Bay, over which there is a magnificent view from the observation tower in the bird's nest. In recent years, the birdhouse has undergone a major renovation. The birdhouse is open daily to the public. Park the car or bicycle in the car park at the Landevejen between Nordby and Sønderho. There is also a bus stop at the car park. Follow the path over the beautiful Sønderho Heath and enjoy the view over the Albue Bay with Jutland in the background.
Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. Sønderho Gamle Fuglekøje is a large, constructed trap consisting of a pond with 6 catch channels, which was originally used to catch wild ducks for food. Today, the birdhouse is used as a living museum. As the only place in Denmark, four birdhouses were built on Fanø in its time, two of which were in use until 1931, when the use of birdhouses for catching ducks for human consumption was banned. From 1960 to 1990, Sønderho Gamle Fuglekøje was used by the Institute of Wildlife Biology for ringing ducks. The birdhouse is always open - please remember to close the door. Admission is free.
